Environmental Education Programs

In this section you can find experiential programs on environmental education and sustainability.

Our programs have been designed based on educational needs and the curriculum and can be implemented: on the inside or outside of your school or at the Culture & Education Center The Betterland. Outdoor programs are implemented in Agia Paraskevi, Kalentzi, Attica, at the Educational Botanical Garden of Flisvos Park, in Palaio Faliro, or in any outdoor space of your choice.

With the completion of each experiential program, each student receives a commemorative gift, while the classroom receives a participation award and the teacher supporting material so that teaching on the topic can be continued in the classroom.

The programs:

The Water Explorers!

A program about water

The challenge

75% of the human body and 75% of our planet consist of water, a key element for our body. This good is taken for granted while it is not.

The educational goals

This specific program is based on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development for the sustainable management of water and sanitation facilities for all and is developed around:

  • the great properties of water, the forms of water and the cycle of water
  • its importance for biodiversity
  • the water pollution
  • the importance of universal and equal access to safe drinking water for all
  • simple suggestions for saving and protecting water

The approach

Through the participatory approach and with the use of rich audiovisual material and active learning tools, children are encouraged to participate in original group kinetic games, explore and discover through experiments, understand and interpret problems on a global scale, while at the same time they are activated through experiential activities to contribute to the adoption of proper conditions in our everyday life.

1, 2, 3… Recycle!

A program about waste management

The challenge

Due to our modern lifestyle, we are confronted with the enormous problem of waste management. The proper use of waste is now imperative starting on an individual level. This specific program triggers children to realize that the issues the planet is facing are also their own issues.

The educational goals

Taking into account the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, the goals of the program are:

  • to make children aware of the problem with waste and of its social and environmental parameters
  • to make children recognize the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” triplet as a solution to the problem
  • to help children to get to know the basic rules for proper recycling
  • to motivate children by triggering their reflection and reaction

The approach

Through a puppet show, children become aware of the waste problem and realize that the solution is in the hands of all of us. They get to know the recyclable materials through music-kinetic experiential games of discovery and waste separation, they learn the basic rules for waste management with the help of a floor play and questions, and they showcase the idea of reusing “useless” materials through crafts made of recyclable materials.

The grievance of animals

A program about endangered species

The challenge

Nature is threatened and everyday more and more animals are in danger of becoming extinct, both nationally and globally. But every species that is lost causes problems to the rest of the ecosystem. People have to protect and respect nature and, of course, listen to the “grievance” of the animals.

The educational goals

The program is structured in accordance with the Global Goals for Sustainable Development about the sustainable use of land ecosystems and its goals are:

  • to get children to know the animals threatened with extinction
  • to make children realize the particular importance of each living creature for the balance of life on our planet
  • to have children informed about the animals threatened with extinction in our country as well as about the relevant causes
  • to have children learn ways of protecting the animals
  • to have children recognize the importance of taking immediate action to end poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna
  • to make children aware, so that they contribute to the efforts of ecological organizations and other entities

The approach

Through rich audiovisual material, children discover the endangered animals, both nationally and globally, participate in music-kinetic games and collaborative activities by getting into the shoes of these animals, are activated through drama game and many other original experiential activities and are made aware in order to find solutions –as active citizens– about the “grievance” of animals.

As seasons change...

A program about the effects of climate change on the 4 seasons

The challenge

Over the last years, climate change is the primary threat to the future of the planet. Strange weather phenomena such as steep ups and downs of temperature, long periods of drought, extreme floods and landslides are happening on the planet, deregulating our beloved seasons… Let’s see what we can do to save autumn, winter, spring and summer! A beautiful travel in time and the four seasons.

The educational goals

The goals of the programs are:

  • to have children discover the seasons, their change and their particular characteristics
  • to have children understand the duration of day and night
  • to have children learn the notion of time and its value
  • to have children know the activities and the various occupations depending on each season
  • to have children understand the notion of climate and climate change
  • to have children realize the changes brought by the climate change
  • to help children relate their daily activities to the possible effects on the environment
  • to have children triggered in order to find ways of reducing the impact as responsible citizens of tomorrow

The approach

Through audiovisual material, children discover, engage themselves in musical games and collaborative activities, they are activated by drama games, pantomime and various other experiential activities, and are made aware in order to create better future conditions for everyone.

My energy back, please!

A program about energy management

The challenge

Energy is a size unknown to our senses, since we can not see it, touch it, hear it or taste it, but it is familiar to all of us, since it is everywhere. The use of renewable energy sources and their preservation are two issues necessary for the improvement of the quality of life.

The educational goals

Through this experiential program, and in accordance with the Global Goal for Sustainable Development of Responsible Consumption and Production, children:

  • understand the notion of energy and its forms
  • identify the use of energy in our everyday life
  • learn about the relation and the role of energy in ecosystems
  • relate energy consumption to key environmental problems
  • discover the necessity of preservation and simple ways to make it a daily routine
  • learn how to calculate their energy fingerprint
  • develop their “energy” and “environmental” consciousness

The approach

The rich audiovisual material helps children get to know energy and its forms, and through their active participation they learn about the proper management of our energy resources, together with daily practical advice on sustainable consumption.

Nature lovers in action!
